Impact of triethanolamine on the sulfate balance of Portland cements with mixed sulfate carriers

The differences between the hydration of Portland cements with single and mixed sulfate carriers in presence triethanolamine (TEA) were investigated, possible mechanisms proposed. Without TEA, different types (gypsum, hemihydrate, anhydrite, mixture these) have a comparable process at same molar amount calcium sulfate. At TEA dosage 0.5 wt.%, sample three shows substantially stronger retardation C3S (This publication uses cement chemist notation: = Ca3SiO5, C2S Ca2SiO4, C3A Ca3Al2O6, C4AF Ca2(Al, Fe)2O5.) than only one these carriers, which is likely caused by rapid formation ettringite fast depletion all carriers.
